I knelt down so I was at her level, and I looked into her eyes. She held my gaze, fixed, determined and saddened, as I quietly spoke.

“I’m so sorry sweetie; I’m sorry mummy had you when she too was only a child; I’m sorry that she barely has enough money to support the family; I’m sorry she swears at you and I’m sorry that she cares more about herself then you or your beautiful little sister. But what I am truly sorry about, is that you wont eve know what it’s like to live unlike the way you do. So promise me baby, promise me that as soon as you can, you will get out… make a life for yourself, because you’re so much better than that life. Smile and lift the world off of your shoulders and see the road ahead.  You’re beautiful darling so go out and shine the way God intended you to.”

With that she wiped away the tears gathering in her eyes and I pulled her into my arms. As we embraced, she quietly whispered into my ear; “I will be your sunshine, and I will shine just for you! I love you!”

With tears now running down my cheeks, I kissed her on the forehead and said a final goodbye.

I have never seen that beautiful young girl again since, but right from the time we parted, my sun has shone a little brighter each day… and everytime I see a little girl I can’t help but smile!
